Professional Mentorship Program

The program provides a safe space for LGBTQA students to share their experiences and to grow professionally and personally.  The Balance Tampa Bay Mentorship Program’s mission is to help LGBTQA students develop a positive LGBTQA and professional identity by matching them with professional LGBTQA members that will serve as role models to successfully navigate the student mentees through challenges and obstacles encountered during their initial career exposure and planning stages.

Mentors can participate in a variety of activities with their mentees (from helping at community service events or attending a social sponsored by Balance Tampa Bay or our partner, the Diversity Chamber of Commerce.  The program runs from February – December.

The Mentorship Program provides:

  • Guidance and Support with academics
  • An empathetic ear
  • Career resources including career-specific knowledge
  • Access to LGBTQA community networks
  • A positive role model
  • A professional relationship

How does it work?

Students submit their application to be a mentee.  The mentorship committee makes the matches based upon commonalities/interests and availability. The chair and/or the vice-chairs of the committee will communicate with the mentors and meet individually with each mentee applicant before making a match. Mentor and mentee are introduced and exchange contact information.

All applicants earn points to potentially be awarded the Diamond Scholarship.  For each meeting between the mentee/mentor 3 points are awarded.  Attendance at services events are worth 2 points and attendance at social events are worth 1 point.  In December the points are tallied.  Scholarship(s) are awarded based on points earned.
